P-38 Mountain Lion shot in the Santa Susana Mountains

cali-man-charged-with-shooting-mountain-lion

P-38, a male mountain lion born in 2012, has died of a gunshot wound to the head. The big cat roamed portions of the Santa Susana Mountains.

The animal was believed to have fathered three kittens with another mountain lion, P-39. Their kittens, given the names P-50, P-51 and P-52, were found in the eastern Santa Susana Mountains in July 2016.

It is unlawful to kill a mountain lion without a permit from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

A California man from Simi Valley was charged this week with fatally shooting P-38 in the head.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife received a July 10 report from the National Park Service that the collared mountain lion may have been killed in Simi Valley after a mortality signal was detected eight days earlier, prosecutors said.

UN Report warns of nature declining at unprecedented rates

A United Nations report warns that #nature is declining globally at rates “unprecedented in human history with grave impacts on global populations likely”.

Human society is in jeopardy from the accelerating decline of the Earth’s natural life-support systems, the world’s leading scientists have warned, as they announced the results of the most thorough planetary health check ever undertaken.

From coral reefs, rainforests and savannahs, nature is being destroyed at a rate tens to hundreds of times higher than the average over the past 10 million years, according to the UN global assessment report.

The biomass of wild mammals has fallen by 82%, natural ecosystems have lost about half their area and a million species are at risk of extinction – all largely as a result of human actions, said the study, compiled over three years by more than 450 scientists and diplomats.

P55 mountain lion found dead in Santa Monica Mountains

p-55-photo-1

We are saddened to hear from the National Park Service about the death of P-55 mountain lion whose remains were found recently in the Santa Monica Mountains.

P55 famously crossed the 101 freeway twice and was only 3 years old when he died (mountain lions can live up to 14 years old).

The cause of his death is still unknown, but the effects of anti-coagulant rodenticides could have played a role, as it has done with other mountain lion deaths such as P-34.

The need to educate about rodenticides and the importance of habitat connectivity is more important than ever. If you or your community would like to sponsor a screening of THE CAT THAT CHANGED AMERICA please get in contact with tony@sabanafilms.com
